What are the most popular search engines in the world? Many of us associate search engines mainly with Google. This is not surprising, as the tech giant is by far the most popular search engine among users in Ireland and the rest of the world. But that doesn’t mean Google has no competition. There are many alternatives in the search engine market that are used by internet users around the world. See the ranking of the most popular search engines in Ireland and the world in 2022.

The most popular search engines in the world

Several search engines are the most popular in the rankings. Google may be at the top, but it’s not the only one. What other search engines are used by internet users around the world?

Google

Google has held the top spot in the ranking of the most popular search engines for many years. The project of two Stanford University students, the first version of which was created in 1996, quickly gained a monopoly on the market. Just two years later, the search engine was launched commercially under the already well-known domain google.com. Google has earned its leadership position with a wide range of products including Android, Gmail, Google Analytics, Maps and Google Chrome. This is by far the most recommended and heavily used search engine by Atlantek Computers technicians.

Bing

Bing is the second most popular search engine among users, although it has only been on the market since 2009. It is Microsoft’s browser, originally called Windows Live Search and then MSN Search. Its popularity is mainly due to the fact that it is the default search engine in Windows, which is automatically activated when the browser is started. This is true not only for desktops but also for Windows Phone smartphones.

DuckDuckGO

A relatively new but well-known search engine on the market is DuckDuckGO. It is a web search engine that was founded in 2008. Its creators pay great attention to the protection of users’ personal data. Unlike other internet giants, DuckDuckGo does not collect information about its users and, therefore, does not use it in advertising networks. Browser users remain completely anonymous and are neither tracked nor exposed to personal ads. On the other hand, the lack of maps, for example, is a clear weakness of the search engine.

Baidu

Another popular Internet search engine is Baidu. It is also the most famous search engine in the Middle Kingdom, as it is a Chinese search engine founded in 2000. It is important to note that this search engine unfortunately only works in Chinese and Japanese. Baidu also offers its users email services, maps, a social network or the cloud and has other portals such as iQiyi, the Chinese equivalent of Netflix.

Yandex

Yandex is a Russian-Dutch search engine. It operates in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Turkey and Kazakhstan. Its global market share is not very large, but in Russia alone it is almost as large as Google’s. The search engine was created in 1997 by Arkady Volozh and Ilya Siegalovich and for a short period of time (2001-2003) it operated in several international versions.

YouTube

YouTube, a video sharing site known to all Internet users, is also very popular among search engines. This is due to the fact that many Internet users are increasingly searching for videos and clips on the Internet. In addition, YouTube is owned by Google, so YouTube videos tend to rank well. This applies to desktops, smartphones and tablets, as well as TVs and game consoles. One major change here is the bandwidth needed to access the content as all of it is in video format meaning that if the whole family uses this search engine there is a need for a stable and strong fibre broadband connection.
